Valentine’s Day is a day which many look forward to. It’s a day when we can share endless love and pamper those we care about. Whether we spend the day with family, friends, significant others, or our fur family, all that matters is making the most of the special day and reminding those we love how important they are.
Here are a few fun ideas if you’d like to make your pets feel extra special this holiday:
Happy New Year everyone!! We hope you all have fun plans to welcome the new year. We want to wish that 2017 will be a great year! To keep your animals safe, please be careful of the noise level. If you plan to dress up your pet, take your pictures quick and then remove the props. We understand that each animal has a different amount of tolerance, but we want you and your pet(s) to have this be a safe & happy welcome to the new year.
The children are trying to finish their summer reading lists, and parents are rushing around to get any last minute school supplies needed for the new school year. It’s an exciting time, and we want everyone to stay safe. School buses are very scary to your pup, so we ask that you either have the children say their good-bye in the house or to keep your pup on a leash with a good distance away from the bus. Stay safe everyone!
“Seattle’s Second Chance Shelter smelled of damp fur and dog breath. Frantic barks and whines pierced the air and assaulted Anna’s ears. She shrank back from the desperation that hung in the air like mist. All the sad eyes begging for a home. The furry foreheads rumpled with anxiety. Anna’s tender heart slid to her feet.
‘We shouldn’t have come here,’ she shouted to her boyfriend, Jeff.
‘You wanted to check out the dogs,’ he said.
Anna was clutching the Second Chance flyer she’d found that morning on Jeff’s windshield. Coming here had seemed the best way to goad themselves into action after weeks of talk about adopting a dog. But now, engulfed by the dogs’ distress, Anna wasn’t so sure.
‘We could have looked for a dog on Petfinder,’ she said. In their rented condo, they could have studied photos on the computer screen.
‘You can tell a lot more of you see a dog in person,’ Jeff said.
‘Yes, but I want to take all these dogs home.’
‘We can only afford to care for one.’”
We all know everyone enjoys a good celebration and the holidays, and we know you want to include your animal companions in the festivities. July 4th is a pretty big holiday with lots of activities going on, mostly barbecues and fireworks. Here are some safety tips so you can include your pets in a way that keeps them safe and happy:
- Keep your pets away from food and alcohol
- If you want to take those cute/funny photos of your pet(s) wearing festive costumes or headpieces: put it on them, take a bunch of photos, then take it off
- Pets generally do not like wearing said costumes or headgear for long periods of time, so limit how long they wear it
- Keep your pets indoors, in a quiet room or with some soft music playing so that the loud noises of the fireworks are less likely to scare them
- Have treats and/or toys in the room with your pet to keep them occupied
- Make sure that the room your pet is staying in is “Escape Proof”
- secure all windows, pull down shades, make sure doors are locked/closed tight
- Talk with your vet about possible options to keep your pet calm
- Some options may be a ThunderShirt or consult with your vet if considering a mild sedative
- If your pet is going to be outside with you during day activities, make sure to have a water bowl accessible for your pet to stay hydrated.
- To help your pet be less anxious about you leaving them at home, exercise them beforehand so they are more likely to be calmer and fall asleep during night festivities
- Make sure your animals have up-to-date tags that are secured to a collar or microchipped, in case they become loose due to being frightened by the holiday festivities

School’s out and summer is finally here! The sun is shining bright, and the family wants to bring their canine companion(s) with them on adventures. You remind yourself to wear sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements. Summer brings fun times doing water sports,
Thank you for always being there for me no matter what. Thanks for rushing to my side when I called out for you, and holding me when I cried. Thank you for taking me to all my doctor/vet visits so that I stayed healthy. Thanks for teaching me important lessons, and helping me grow.
“My alarm clock failed to ring, but by skipping morning coffee I manages to be only fifteen minutes late. As the elevator crawled to the eighth floor of the Animal Medical Center I hoped that perhaps Clancy too had overslept. It was 7:20. The elevator door opened and I stepped into the hall to find him waiting.
“I know I’m late, Clancy, but it happens occasionally.” He looked angry. “If you would just wait until I come get you, you wouldn’t have to pace in the corridor.”
I unlocked the office door, and he brushed past me as he entered. I opened the drawer immediately, knowing there would be no peace until he got what he wanted. Clancy was not a finicky eater and promptly concentrated on his breakfast.
It was a glorious day for Windsor’s annual Shad Derby. Lots of people came out to eat fried dough, drink lemonade, munch on kettle corn, devour ice cream, participate in eating contests, to watch the parade, and check out all the various vendors, including a booth of our very own, representing The Happy Cat Hotel.
This week’s featured breed is the Pug! The adorable little dog with the wrinkled face, and loud snorting has captured our hearts time and time again. They are such playful and loving canine companions, and if you chat with any Pug owner, they will have endless cute photos of their precious pooch and happily tell you how wonderful the breed is. We are lucky enough to walk a few Pugs every day! We want to feature a brother and sister pair: Mason and Dixie!
“Dixie is bursting with pug love. She’s a friendly, patient pug and just wants to climb on you and give you kisses on your nose. She’s a snuggle bug, and will always be the one leading the pack and racing her way back home from her walk.
Mason is a feisty, bold pug with the most inquisitive expressions and a huge pug smile. Every day he comes charging at the door, only to turn around, go grab a toy, and then run right back.
They both LIVE for their peanut butter biscuits.”
